Important Info You Should Know
At BETTER MANAGED TOYS, we’re all about transparency and keeping things simple. Before diving into our services, here’s some additional information to keep in mind:
No Legal Advice on Patenting or Trademarking:
While we have years of experience in the toy industry, we’re not legal experts. Therefore, we cannot provide advice on patenting, trademarking, or other legal matters. However, as most toy ideas are only on the market for a year or two, we typically don’t recommend investing in a patent on a concept unless it contains a very unique proprietary technology.
Timelines for Licensing Success:
Licensing is unpredictable! Some products in our portfolio take as little as three weeks to find a home, while others may take years. Once licensed, a product usually takes 12 to 18 months to hit the shelves. There’s no guaranteed timeline, but persistence is key!
Presentation Matters:
Competition in the toy industry is fierce. Your submission should be high quality and stand out. We are very selective about which concepts we’ll represent. However, if we see potential, we’ll send you an agency agreement at no cost to you. If the concept needs more development, design improvements are at your own expense, but we can recommend trusted designers who work on a “work-for-hire” basis, so you retain ownership.
Our Fee Structure:
We don’t charge upfront fees to represent your idea and enter into a licensing agreement. Our royalty share depends on the size of the toy company licensing your idea:
For large companies like Hasbro or Mattel, the split is 40% to us and 60% to you.
For smaller companies, which typically have limited distribution, we share the royalty income equally. However, we’ll continue to explore additional licensing opportunities in different regions if applicable.
No Promises on Royalties:
While we do our best to license your idea, only a few concepts make it each year, and royalties can vary from a few thousand dollars to much larger sums. We don’t guarantee licensing success or specific income from your idea.
How Royalties are Calculated:
Royalties are calculated based on the wholesale price, not the retail price. For example, if a doll manufactured by Mattel retails for $34.99 but wholesales at $20.00, and the royalty rate is 5%, selling 350,000 units would generate $350,000 in royalties, with your 60% share totaling $210,000.
If the product uses a licensed character (e.g., Pokemon™), the royalty rate might drop to 2%-3% because of the character licensing fees. In this case, your share would be proportionate to the new rate.
Areas of Interest:
Games: Electronic or plastic action games, preschool games, board games, card games, novel adult/party games, family games, and light strategy games.
Toys: Dolls with mechanical or electronic features, collectible figures, accessories/playsets for fashion or smaller scale dolls (e.g. Barbie/Polly Pocket), outdoor/water toys, plush animals/characters with interactive features, preschool or infant toys, vehicles with unique mechanical features or special performance, and crafts/activities that are safe, easy and allow the child to meke something
Gifts/Novelty: Sentiment-driven gifts with strong features or unique light-up elements. Unique “out-of-the-box” ideas that would create an “impulse” purchase.
Remember: We’re a licensing agency, not a marketing company. Our goal is to assist you with great, licensable ideas and guide you on the path to royalties.
